Pain ManagementBack Pain – A Common Problem

Back pain is a very common problem effecting four out of five people at some time in their lives. Back pain can be caused by trauma, whether it be a serious accident, sports injury, or just by sudden movement or lifting improperly. Trauma to the back can cause strained muscles or ligaments, and bone and nerve damage. Other culprits, especially as we age, include arthritis, spine deformities, or a bulging or rupturing vertebrae disk that is pressing on a nerve.

How Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture can help to relieve back pain, whether it be upper, mid, or lower. Most back pain is due to Qi and Blood stagnation along the meridians, specially in acute cases. There are acupuncture points specific for back pain, to move the Qi and Blood, removing the stagnation and pain. Back pain can be due to a deficiency in the body as well. Chronic back pain usually includes an underlying deficiency in the body, namely a Kidney deficiency. In Oriental Medicine, the Kidney is related to the bone, back pain, and knee pain. By strengthening the Kidney, the back can also be strengthened, relieving pain. Back pain can also be due to weather issues, such as cold and damp. So as you can see, correct diagnosis is critical in devising the right acupuncture and herbal treatment plan. Oriental Medicine doesn’t just numb the pain, but treats the root cause of the pain. In addition to acupuncture, other therapies such as herbal medicine, electro-stimulation, cupping, and Tuina (a type of therapeutic massage), are used to relieve back pain, strengthen the back, promote healing, and tonify underlying deficiencies.
